Transgender People are Completely Banned From Boarding Airplanes in Canada →
The shit hit the fan in the trans blogosphere last night, when it came to light that there is a disturbing new section in the Identity Screening Regulations used in airports throughout Canada. Simply put, Transgender People are Completely Banned From Boarding Airplanes in Canada.
The offending section of the regulations reads:
5.2 (1) An air carrier shall not transport a passenger if …
(c) the passenger does not appear to be of the gender indicated on the identification he or she presents;Although this obviously discriminatory smear of regulation did not come to significant public attention until very recently, it apparently came into effect on July 27th, 2011.
It is important to note that these regulations are not actually a piece of legislation, which would have had to pass through readings and votes in the House and Senate (which is probably why it went unnoticed until now). Rather, the Identity Screening Regulations are a set of rules implemented unilaterally by the Ministry of Transportation, as part of Canada’s so-called Passenger Protect, which is essentially the Canadian Federal Government’s equivalent to the U.S.’s “no-fly” list.
Minister of Transportation Denis Lebel is, of course, a federal Conservative MP appointed to the cabinet position by Stephen Harper.
So what does this mean? Well, in order to change the ‘sex’ designation on a Canadian Passport, the federal government requires proof that surgery has taken place, or will take place within one year. So for non-operative transgender persons, for gender nonconforming (genderqueer) persons, and for the vast majority of pre-operative transsexual persons, it is literally impossible to obtain proper travel documentation marked with the sex designation which “matches” the gender identity in which they live.
In the eyes of the honourable Minister of Transportation, that makes trans people unfit to fly in Canada.
It is interesting to note that this regulatory adjustment occurred immediately following the federal election in 2011. In the previous parliament, Bill C-389, a bill to amend the Human Rights Code to explicitly enshrine protections against discrimination for transgender people, had successfully passed in the House of Commons, only to die on the Senate floor when Harper declared a Federal Election (thereby dissolving parliament).
Is the timing of this disturbing and blatantly discriminatory regulatory adjustment merely a coincidence? That is up to you to decide. However, the negative impact on trans people is crystal clear, and we need to take action now.

I wish for discussion about how to come to terms with my body, how to ease the pain of…
I’ve developed a curricula for work that incorporates all of those wishes and some other trans topics that I think are important. Glad more people are thinking about it than just me…

An Exciting New iPhone App for Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Folks!
Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes’ LGBT Health and Wellness Project, Out for Health, is pleased to present their Pee in Peace App! This app is designed to help transgender, gender non-conforming, and other individuals who do not readily fit into expected and conventional norms of gender presentation, easily locate single stall or gender neutral bathrooms in Ithaca, New York!
The idea for this app came about after a survey conducted by the San Francisco Human Rights Commission found that nearly 50% of respondents reported having been harassed or assaulted in a public bathroom. Because of this, many transgender people avoid public bathrooms altogether and can develop health problems as a result. It has become Out for Health’s commitment to work toward removing the barriers to accessing safe bathrooms.

Pee in Peace is the premiere interactive map of MOST single stall and gender neutral restrooms in Ithaca, New York. Because public restrooms can pose some risks (from cleanliness to safety), Out for Health has done the work for you so you can pee in peace! For anyone who needs quick and easy access to a private bathroom - from caregivers for people of a different sex, to anyone who just prefers a private place, and especially for transgender and gender non-conforming people who may have a specific need for safe and private restrooms. Everyone deserves a place to pee in peace, right here in Ithaca, New York.Features:

“I met Lola Purping during our “photo-walk” at Binondo today. She was sitting quietly at the gutter right outside the San Lorenzo Ruiz Church. I couldn’t help but noticed the big lump on her face that she is trying to cover with her hair. She would throw some shy glances at me perhaps because she felt uneasy that a big guy carrying a huge camera is staring at her. I smiled at her and she timidly smiled back at me. I sat besides her and tried to strike a conversation.
Lola Purping is a street dweller from Samar. She is about 70 years old with poor eyesight and carrying a large tumor near her face. She and her grandchildren would sleep with empty stomachs on the streets where and whenever the night would catch them. I told her that she is a bit old to take care of her grandchildren. She told me that her children left her without a choice as they went to Cotobato and never returned until now.
2 days ago, she lost her few valuables, money and medicines to a pickpocket as she was going out of the church where she stays from morning till afternoon.
I asked her if I can take her photo and put her story on my blog hoping that some kind souls might be able to offer some help – any help. With tears on her eyes, she nodded.
If you happen to pass by San Lorenzo Ruiz Church in Binondo, you might see Lola Purping quietly sitting along the gutter when she is not inside the church praying. Please offer a kind smile to her.
