I was in Girl Scouts when I was a little kid, which probably sounds weird because I’m a grown man haha Being trans* has it’s weird life stories… Anyway, in light of the controversy on the west coast about Girl Scouts allowing transwomen in their troops. Well, I want to share my story with Girl Scouts, from a transman’s perspective.
I was in Girl Scouts for at least 6 years growing up, maybe more, I can’t really remember. I was always going on cool trips and planning events for younger girl scouts. I loved it, I went on to do very similar things in college and even with my current job — I’m always planning trips and events. My love for the outdoors has been one of few constants in my life, which developed in my early years as a Girl Scout.
During a couple summer’s of college, I worked as a male counselor at a Girl Scout camp. Why? Because Girl Scouts is an equal opportunity employer, and hold true to the meaning of that. I worked there for two summer’s, and was going to for a third until I became employed at my current job. They hired me knowing full well I’m trans, I started my medical transition at this job and my co workers and supervisors were nothing but supportive the entire time.
I had an extremely positive life-long experience with Girl Scouts, and I fully support the work they do.
